Job Description: Assistant Stable Manager/Riding Instructor
Classification: Full Time, Salaried, Exempt
Reports to: Director of Riding
Job Summary: This role will be split 50% as Assistant Stable Manager and 50% as Riding Instructor.
In the role of Assistant Stable Manager this person is responsible for assisting the Stable Manager to ensure the operations of the equestrian program and the needs of the physical plant are being attended to in the most effective and efficient means possible. The Assistant Stable Manager assists with the full care of the horses. This includes managing treatments and medical conditions in collaboration with the Stable Manager and working with the grooming staff to maintain exceptional daily horse care. The Assistant Stable Manager is an integral part of the day-to-day operations of the program as well as the occasional maintenance of the physical plant.
Key Responsibilities:
● Collaborating with the Stable Manager to create a treatment plan, review and revise the plan as needed, provide treatments and monitor horse's progress for any and all conditions being treated. This is done in conjunction with the grooming staff
● Managing and supervising grooms and exercising discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance concerning daily horse care, non-emergency horse health issues and emergency situations both during regular shifts and when serving in an on call capacity after hours
● Organizing and maintaining inventory of supplies, placing orders as needed, maintaining blanket cleaning and repair with third party vendors, keeping horse medical and nutritional records
● Assisting, as needed, with the basic daily care of horses including but not limited to monitoring and recording temperatures, grooming, feeding, stall cleaning and set up, laundry
● Ability to perform supplemental grooming tasks such as trimming and/or full body clipping, and pulling manes
● Participating in a rotating on call schedule which includes some weekends, after hours and holidays as well as possible night check duties
● Informing the Stable Manager or Director of Riding of any horse-related concerns or
defects in the physical plant which require repairs
● Ability to drive a truck and horse trailer to transport horses and equipment
● Occasionally operating tractors and equipment to maintain arena footing and maintain
paddocks and fields with hay, water and secure fencing

In the role of Instructor, this person is responsible for the delivery of quality unmounted and mounted riding instruction to students of all levels enrolled in the Foxcroft School Riding Program. The Instructor, in cooperation with the Director of Riding and Associate Directors of Riding, supports the curriculum and mission of the equestrian program. The Instructor is an integral part of designing and delivering the high level of programming that is expected of the Foxcroft School Riding Program. In fulfilling these duties, the Instructor is responsible to identify horse health or soundness concerns as well as any concerns regarding student welfare or progress and report them to their Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
● Developing and executing lesson plans for riders of varying levels in small to medium sized group lesson formats. These riders will primarily be at the beginner through the novice level of riding but may include some of the intermediate to advanced riders
● Overseeing and implementing the proper care for the horses being ridden both before and after lessons
● Helping to maintain the fitness, rehabilitation and training of school and privately owned horses by hand walking, longeing or riding horses as needed
● Attending horse shows, as needed, to assist with horse care, training and student instruction
● Promoting and maintaining a safe environment for the students and staff. This includes activating emergency response protocols in the event of a rider injury or illness and informing the Director of Riding of any concerns or incidents
● Informing the Stable Manager or Director of Riding of any horse-related concerns or
defects in the physical plant which require repairs

Qualifications:
● High School diploma and minimum 3-5 years of experience as a well-regarded professional in the equine industry with a focus on horse care and teaching riding to students of all levels
● Familiarity with School equestrian programs
● Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical and organizational skills
● Ability to work independently and as a part of a high-performing team with exceptional initiative
● Strong customer-service orientation
● Willingness and ability to have a flexible work schedule
● Appreciation of, and commitment to, single sex and boarding school education

While performing the duties of this position an incumbent may be required to longe or ride a variety of horses, and perform manual labor maintaining the care of horses, and physical plant.
The employee is regularly required to listen, physically direct, and speak. The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands and arms to reach and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person.
The incumbent may be required to lift up to 80-100 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop.
The work schedule may include weekdays and/or just Saturdays and hours are dependent on departmental scheduling needs and availability of the employee.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet; however, variations in noise level may occur if the employee attends school functions such as assemblies, graduation and other events.
